Our Company

With local headquarters in Mahwah, New Jersey, Rockland Electric Company, a subsidiary of Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc., provides safe and reliable electric service for 73,000 customers in 25 communities throughout 207 square miles in New Jersey. Facing climate change, we have invested $60 million over the past 7 years to make our electric system stronger and supported more than 7,500 solar projects since 2001. We employ nearly 1,200 talented, diverse, and dedicated women and men, and most reside in the region we serve. As an equal opportunity employer, Rockland Electric Company is committed to creating an inclusive and respectful workplace for all our employees.

Our Supplier Diversity

As an active member of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ Supplier Diversity Development Counsel, we support ongoing outreach efforts to increase opportunities for New Jersey-based MWBEs (Minority and Women Business Enterprise) in the utility industry. We also assist with the Utility Supplier Diversity Utilization compliance report that goes to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.

We have created a partnership with the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey to assist us with sourcing MWBEs. We have also partnered with the NY-NJ Chapter of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce and the Rockland Procurement Technical Assistance Center to recruit MWBEs and support MWBE capacity building. We also received the Supplier Diversity Award from the Tri-State Chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors.

Our Energy Future

We’re constantly looking toward the future and exploring ways to innovate and take advantage of developing technology. But, more than anything, we’re listening to our customers and working hard to give them cleaner, more efficient energy choices, and more control over when and how they use our power.

Rockland Electric is striving to incorporate the latest, cleanest technology to complement the distribution system, enable renewable power generation and defer building additional infrastructure. For example, we are advancing electric vehicles in support of a lower carbon future; and we are exploring new clean energy business models in partnership with technology and software providers through renewable energy demonstration projects.

We were the first utility in New Jersey to deploy Smart Meters, and we have completed installation of the nearly 73,000 smart meters needed throughout the service territory. Benefits of the Smart Meter System include:

  • Reduction of overall costs to customers
  • Allowing customers to manage their bills in new ways, enabling alerts
  • Improving outage response and restoration
  • Easing activation of new service
  • Enhancing reliability
  • Reducing emissions

Also, our innovative Non-Wires Alternative projects programs allow us to partner with customers and DER (Distributed Energy Resources) providers to defer the need for large infrastructure. We are determined to stay at the forefront of technology that will benefit both our customers as well as the environment for our sustainable future.

  • Our parent company (Con Edison, Inc.) is North America’s 2nd largest solar energy producer in North America, and the 7th largest in the world.
  • We’ve invested $5.8 billion in renewable energy projects in 19 states.
  • Since 2001, we’ve supported over 7,500 solar projects.
  • Since 2009, we’ve helped 35,000 customers reduce CO2 emissions by 580,000 tons, through energy efficiency programs – and we’re tripling that by 2030.
  • Nearly 25% of electricity used by our customers is generated from renewable energy sources.
  • We’re working toward 100% clean electricity by 2040.

Our Community Partnerships

Our partnerships strengthen the neighborhoods we serve by offering cash grants, employee volunteers and more. In the past 10 years, we’ve donated $5.4 million to charitable organizations throughout our service territory, and we are proud to support several nonprofit organizations in New Jersey, including:

  • Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization (MEVO)
  • County of Bergen’s Winter Wonderland
  • Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc.
  • Ramapo College – Mobile STEM Bus
  • NY/NJ Trail Conference
  • The Pascack Pi-oneers, FIRST Robotics Team 1676

In 2019, we awarded five STEM Grants to schools in Bergen County, totaling more than $4,000.

In addition, NJ SHARES provides financial assistance to Rockland Electric Company customers who find themselves unable to pay their home-heating bills because of emergency conditions. These grants are funded by contributions from thousands of our customers. The shareholders of Consolidated Edison, Inc., Orange & Rockland’s parent company, also make a sizable contribution to the fund.
