New Jersey American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.7 million people in 192 communities. Over 840 highly-skilled professionals carry out the company’s foremost responsibility of providing safe and reliable water and wastewater service to our customers around the clock.

New Jersey American Water’s parent company, American Water, was founded in 1886 and is headquartered in Camden, New Jersey. As the largest and most geographically diverse publicly traded water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., American Water employs over 7,100 dedicated professionals who provide services to more than 14 million people in 46 states.

New Jersey American Water takes water quality seriously and boasts an exceptional track record when it comes to regulatory compliance. The company performs thousands of tests every day for about 100 regulated contaminants, and it continuously meets or surpasses all federal regulations, scoring amongst the highest of all water companies. In fact, five of New Jersey American Water’s treatment plants have been nationally recognized with Directors Awards from the U.S. EPA’s Partnership for Safe Water program for surpassing federal and state drinking water standards.

The company works tirelessly to ensure its facilities operate efficiently and meet all regulatory standards. This requires investing millions each year in infrastructure, including treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, pipes, fire hydrants and metering equipment. New Jersey American Water invested more than $375 million in 2019 alone to improve the water treatment and pipeline systems across the state and won a Distinguished Engineering Award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action for an innovative transmission main rehabilitation project in South Plainfield, N.J.

New Jersey American Water also holds investments in the environment close to its heart. With solar installations at six of its treatment facilities, the company has produced more than 3 million kWh of solar energy annually in the past four years, reducing its CO2 emissions by more than 5,000 metric tons total. It also utilizes an innovative water loss management system to keep its lost water average about 10 percent lower than the state average. Furthermore, to reduce the amount of solid waste created during the water treatment process, the company recycles 90 percent of its residuals for applications including topsoil, landfill caps, land restoration, and soil conditioner.

New Jersey American Water provides a robust community education and outreach program that includes participation in community events with customer information and a mobile “H2O on the Go” water hydration station, a speaker’s bureau providing presentations to schools and community groups, plant tours and other outreach efforts. The company also partners with Scholastic to bring water protection and conservation education into classrooms across the state.

Currently, New Jersey American Water is accepting applications for its First Responder Grant program and its Environmental Grant program which allow the company to invest in its communities by alleviating some financial burdens of volunteer firefighting and EMS groups and funding local projects to protect watersheds and water sources.
