NJ Affordable, Clean, Reliable Energy Coalition Praises New PoleStar Report
A major new study released today by the Nuclear Energy Institute warns that without nuclear energy, New Jersey will not meet its goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 10 percent over the next 11 years, nor meet the cooperative goals set by 10 Northeastern states to cut emissions from the generation of electricity, known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The report, conducted by the Polestar Applied Technology, Inc, can be read in its entirety here.
Below are comments from NJ ACRE in support of the study and its findings:
-
Dr. Edward Salmon, Chairman,
NJ Affordable, Clean, Reliable Energy Coalition:
“Cleaner air and a continued supply of affordable electricity are goals worthy of all New Jerseyans. But as this report warns, achieving the desired reductions in CO2 emissions is not possible without a diverse energy portfolio that includes nuclear energy. We at NJ ACRE believe that Gov. Corzine should be applauded for taking proactive steps toward reaching these worthy goals through common ground solutions based on the facts.” -
The Honorable Connie Hughes,
Former New Jersey Board of Public Utilities President and Commissioner:
“This report shows that reducing greenhouse gas emissions and maintaining affordable, reliable electricity is a realistic aim for New Jersey. But setting the greenhouse reduction goals is only the first step. The facts show that we must implement a strategy of energy conservation, the development of new renewable energy sources and the continued operation of nuclear power plants like Oyster Creek.” -
Dr. Fred Abbate,
Former President and CEO of the New Jersey Utilities Association:
“While we must continue investing in renewable sources like wind and solar power, these sources alone cannot reliably produce enough electricity to power New Jersey now or in the future. This report is the latest study proving that nuclear power, which produces more than half of the state’s electricity at a low cost, is essential to meeting the state’s growing energy demand with no increase in greenhouse gas emissions.”
